Little One

Again, long time no upload. I haven't been doing very much art lately. I started this right before my 1-1 worker's (Andrea) birthday, which I forget now but it was late June or July if I remember right.

I think I've finally learned my lesson and to do the background first, cause there has been at least three other background versions on this painting. First, it was a greenish sky without reference. Then there was two more that I can't remember, but you can see the colours I used for it on the side of the canvas (yellow, and white). Then I asked Andrea what her favourite colour was, which was red, so I tried to do one of the red African sky backgrounds however with the lighting it kind of just looked like the baby was in Hell.

So I looked up some references on dA and got permission to use the background now portrayed. Through the process, though, half of the original (finished) calf was painted over and the majority of the mum's arm was gone so I had to redo those.

As I've said, I have learned my lesson.

I tried to do a bit of research with this one on the animal itself ... my 1-1 worker, Andrea, had said her favourite animal was an elephant. She's also been to Thailand and has some weird thing with Thailand; elephants are in Thailand and are a part of the culture. I read about their "white elephants" and considering painting one of those, looked at pictures of how the elephants are decorated and if they are put to work. I have two other preliminary sketches that look completely different than this one, but in the end I decided to go with a more plain, naturalistic look. I still might end up putting facepaint on the calf, but that's unlikely.

I've been finished this for at least a week, but when I scanned it the first time the scanner software made my computer's Internet stop working for some reason, and so I made a back-up and put the computer in for repairs. Two days later I get it back and the back-up disk does not work. I re-scan it later in the week, spend a few hours in Gimpy combining the two scans and trying to get the colours to match the original. Then I go to upload it to the Internet and my Internet isn't working, but it's because the landlord has done something. I back-up again, get on the bus with the disk, and go to a family member's house to upload on their computer but the back-up disk is not compatible. I groan, and the next day the Internet is working and so here we are.

Lastly, I thought I'd mention that the colours, despite my attempts, still aren't very close to the original. The yellow above the calf's back is ... less orange and brighter, the purples are pinks and brighter and deeper and the "sky spots" under the calf have more orange and yellow in them... at least the blues are pretty close.
